Reel them in!
The whole purpose of your newsletter is that people will actually read it so make sure you think up a relevant topic for the newsletter, something else than just "newsletter". Make it a bit tentalizing, maybe with a special topic for the readers of your newsletter
Go easy on the exclamation marks, that can be considered spammy.
Get a bit silly
In general the readers of the newsletter are already customer and it's a very good idea to make them feel special. So give them a special discount for instance. Everybody likes a bargain and it will give your customers the feeling they are appreciated.
I also like including a fun pic every now and then. I have pets, Tinka is quite famous already. ;-) Most people like pets and enjoy reading about her. By sharing a bit of personal information, your customers can connect more easily and they will remember who you are!
How to write a newsletter
Keep in touch!
To keep in touch with your customers or potential customers is of the utmost importance when you have an internet business. People like to buy from people they know. And since they don't know you in person, you have to connect to your customers in a different way. Sending out a newsletter is the perfect medium for that.
Of course this means you have to make an effort to actually write content but it will really be worth the trouble.
I have a number of suggestions for you and there are also a few rules.
Opt-in / Opt-out
Make sure you make use of opt-in/ opt-out rules. Opt-in means that the recipient of the newsletter has opted to the newsletter, for instance by adding their email addy to the list on your site. Opt-out means that it's very easy for recipients to stop their subscription to your newsletter. Ideally by a simple click at the bottom of your newsletter.
This is a very important rule because you certainly don't want your newsletter to be considered spam.
The actual newsfactor
Only send out a newsletter when you really have interesting bits of news for your subscribers. So don't make yourself send out a newsletter every week, this can easily become articifial.
Moreover, your subscribers will enjoy reading your newsletter because they know you will have real news or good deals for them in every newsletter.
Language and grammar
Of course proper use of the English language is important but the tone of voice you use is even more important. It's up to you of course but I rather read informal letters than very formal stuff. Reminds me too much of the IRS. :P
So I would recommend to just write as if you were to talk to someone.
Added bonus is that it will come more easily to you.
